I have had a few opportunities to program on the lighting board just to get extra experience and see how some songs flow.

If you can build up a bank of several preprogrammed songs it can save you a lot of time when preparing for services. Additionally, having programmed a song before in a low-pressure environment helps when you have limited time available.
